The Effects of Local-scale Resource Heterogeneity on Tropical Tree Communities By

چکیده
Both habitat partitioning and dispersal limitation influence the compositional structure of forest communities, but little is known about the relative contributions of these two processes, or the roles of different types of environmental variation. I used variation partitioning based on canonical redundancy analysis to decompose community compositional variation within eight large (24-50 ha) tropical forest plots into fractions explained by spatial, soil resource, and topographic variables. All environmental variables together explained 13-39% of compositional variation within a plot, with both soil resources and topography accounting for significant and approximately equal variation (9-34% and 5-29%, respectively). Additionally, a large fraction of variation (19-37%) was spatially structured yet unexplained by the environment, suggesting an important role for dispersal processes. My results, illustrated using a new graphical depiction of community structure within these plots, demonstrate the importance of small-scale environmental variation in shaping local community structure in diverse tropical forests around the globe. INTRODUCTION A major challenge for community ecology is to understand the importance of nicheassembly processes in shaping community structure. This is of particular interest in species rich communities such as tropical forests, because niche partitioning is thought to facilitate species coexistence and may therefore play an important role in biodiversity maintenance (Chesson 2000, Chave et al. 2002). Evidence for the role of habitat partitioning among tropical forest tree species has been found from local to landscape scales, and comes from observed non-random

Soil nutrients influence spatial distributions of tropical tree species.
The importance of niche vs. neutral assembly mechanisms in structuring tropical tree communities remains an important unsettled question in community ecology [Bell G (2005) Ecology 86:1757-1770]. There is ample evidence that species distributions are determined by soils and habitat factors at landscape (<10(4) km(2)) and regional scales. At local scales (<1 km(2)), however, habitat factors and ...
متن کاملHabitat filtering across tree life stages in tropical forest communities.
Tropical tree communities are shaped by local-scale habitat heterogeneity in the form of topographic and edaphic variation, but the life-history stage at which habitat associations develop remains poorly understood. This is due, in part, to the fact that previous studies have not accounted for the widely disparate sample sizes (number of stems) that result when trees are divided into size class...
متن کاملEffects of management on aquatic tree-hole communities in temperate forests are mediated by detritus amount and water chemistry.
Arthropod communities in water-filled tree holes may be sensitive to impacts of forest management, for example via changes in environmental conditions such as resource input. We hypothesized that increasing forest management intensity (ForMI) negatively affects arthropod abundance and richness and shifts community composition and trophic structure of tree hole communities. We predicted that thi...

Please cite this article in press as: Jha, S., Vander doi:10.1016/j.biocon.2010.03.017 Though it is undoubted that tropical bees are influenced by habitat composition, few studies have investigated the relative importance of both local and landscape-level habitat parameters in supporting large and diverse bee communities. The conservation of native bee communities within agroforestry landscapes...
متن کاملCognitive mapping concept of resource management for the viability of local communities
The local community is a complex socio-economic system, and its ability to function for an indefinitely long period of time (viability) is not investigated sufficiently today. The purpose of the research was, using the cognitive mapping, propose to the local community management developing their own management strategies to ensure its viability. Considering the weakly structured subject area of...
